Spectrum Spurs

At Spectrum Spurs, we believe in the profound healing power of the human-horse connection. Our equine-assisted learning program offers a unique and effective approach to emotional, physical, and mental well-being.

This program focuses on grooming, groundwork, and connection—not horseback riding—allowing participants to develop emotional awareness, resilience, and confidence in a calming, structured environment.

What is Equine Assisted Learning?

Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) is a hands-on, experiential learning approach that uses interactions with horses to develop emotional, cognitive, and social skills. This method is rooted in psychological principles and is designed to help individuals improve self-awareness, emotional regulation, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EAL is activity-based and focuses on non-riding interactions with horses, such as grooming, leading, and observing behavior. Horses provide instant, nonjudgmental feedback, making them powerful partners in emotional and behavioral growth.

Psychological Approaches used in EAL

  1. Cognitive-Behavioral Approach
    • Helps individuals identify and reframe negative thought patterns.
    • Encourages problem-solving and emotional regulation.
    • Example: If a participant hesitates while leading a horse, discussing their fears and adjusting their approach can help build confidence and shift negative self-perceptions.
  2. Behavioral Approach
    • Focuses on reinforcing positive behaviors through experiential learning.
    • Encourages participants to practice boundary-setting, assertiveness, and coping skills in real time.
    • Example: A participant who struggles with patience might learn to remain calm while waiting for a horse to respond to a cue.
  3. Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)
    • Uses the presence of horses to promote mindfulness and grounding techniques.
    • Helps participants become aware of their emotions and bodily sensations in the moment.
    • Example: Brushing a horse slowly and attentively can be a calming, meditative exercise that reduces stress and anxiety.

Why horses?

Horses are uniquely suited for Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) because of their intuitive, nonjudgmental, and responsive nature. Unlike humans, horses react honestly and immediately to body language, emotions, and energy, making them excellent partners for personal growth. Working with horses encourages emotional regulation, self-confidence, communication skills, trust and boundaries, and stress reduction.

About Cait Jaconski: Bridging Psychology & Horses

Caitlyn Jaconski, M.A. in Psychology

As both a lifelong equestrian and a psychology professional, I am passionate about blending the transformative power of horses with the science of human behavior.

With a background in psychology and hands-on experience working with individuals facing anxiety, social challenges, trauma, and personal growth hurdles, I understand how crucial it is to provide a safe, supportive space for learning and healing.

Through Spectrum Spurs, my goal is to help participants build confidence, emotional resilience, and self-awareness—all while working alongside these incredible animals. Horses have taught me patience, trust, and the importance of connection, and I am honored to facilitate these same lessons for others.

Whether you’re seeking stress relief, social development, or a deeper understanding of yourself, I look forward to guiding you on this journey through Equine-Assisted Learning!
